From the New Director of Faith Formation

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, where we recall during the Easter Season the great mercy that God has shown us in the forgiveness of our sins by means of the Cross of Our Lord. Let us also not forget the apostle of Divine Mercy, Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska. Through her religious life in a Polish convent in Krakow, Our Lord manifested his merciful love in such a wonderful way. I encourage you to become more familiar with her diary and, especially, the Divine Mercy Chaplet. You are always more than welcome to join the Holy Cross staff on Wednesdays at 2:45pm, when we gather to pray the Chaplet for all of you whom we serve.

From our new Director of Faith Formation, Samuel:

Hello Holy Cross family! My name is Samuel Otwell, and I will be your new Director of Faith Formation beginning June 1st! I am so excited to come and join the work of God in Kernersville and serve the families of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

I want to use this opportunity to introduce myself and my family to you and communicate my vision for serving you at Holy Cross. My wife, Ali, and our three children (Jubilee, Elet, and Gemma) are moving from Columbus, GA, where I have worked as a high school religion teacher for the past two years. I hold two master’s in religion, one from Baylor University and the other from Duke University. North Carolina is very special to my wife and me. I grew up in High Point, and my wife and I met near Boone, NC. When we found out that there was a job opening in Kernersville, my wife and I were very excited at the possibility of moving there. I can’t wait to begin serving God with you and getting to know you all in the years to come!

My vision for religious education is to make God’s truth come alive for the Church in the way needed for the time and place in which we live. The Catholic Faith is living and active because it is God’s word of love to us today, ever new, just as much as it was when it first sounded from the lips of Christ and his apostles. My vision is that Holy Cross be a parish with a lively faith and a culture of love and life in which God’s truth is real, tangible, and fundamental to the life of every family and individual member. Every program, every lesson, every event, every conversation should have this lively faith as it source and its goal, and to the best of my ability and with your help and support, I hope to work toward making this a reality.

I want to say again that I cannot wait to be with you soon to begin getting to know you and becoming a part of your community! You will all be in my prayers, and I ask that you pray for us as well as our family begins our transition to North Carolina in the coming months. God’s blessing on you all!
